‘Literature’: who needs it?

Why is it so difficult to dislodge the word literature? I never use it these days. I don’t like the idea that we can or should isolate the good stuff. Good for what, after all? And who says?

I have my preferences. So, I’m sure, do you. But canonising them doesn’t add anything useful.

Literature limits. It sets up borders and boundaries. It presupposes that the thing to be done with a book is judge it.

Let’s read it instead.
